Painted in gold, set with jewels.
Paintings, drawings and prints by Mahrukh Ahmed, a London artist who signs her work Elysoria. Queens, phoenixes, crowned cats, palaces and the city at night, finished with gold and jewellery picked out dot by dot.

From drawing to print
How the owl linocut was made. Every white line in the final print is a cut made by hand.
-
Transfer
The drawing is traced onto the lino block, so every line is fixed before cutting begins.
-
Carve
Everything that should stay white is cut away with gouges. Nothing can be put back.
-
Print
The block is rolled with indigo ink and pressed onto paper, revealing the owl.
About Mahrukh
Elysoria is the name Mahrukh Ahmed signs her paintings with. She lives and works in London.
Her colour work is rich and decorative: textured grounds, metallic gold, Arabic calligraphy raised in gold, and crowns, collars and headdresses built up from hundreds of raised dots of paint so they catch the light like real stones.
Alongside it she keeps a quieter practice in graphite, monochrome oil, linocut and cut paper, where a picture has to hold together with no gold at all.
